La resistividad eléctrica es una propiedad intrínseca que cuantifica cuán fuertemente un material dado se opone al flujo de corriente eléctrica. Una baja resistividad indica un material que permite fácilmente el movimiento de la carga eléctrica. La resistividad es comúnmente representada por la letra griega ρ. La unidad SI de resistividad eléctrica es el ohm⋅metre aunque también están en uso otras unidades como ohm⋅centimetre. Por ejemplo, si un cubo sólido de material de 1 m × 1 m × 1 m tiene contactos de chapa en dos caras opuestas y la resistencia entre estos contactos es de 1 Ω, entonces la resistividad del material es 1 Ω⋅m. La conductividad eléctrica o conductancia específica es el recíproco de la resistividad eléctrica, y mide la capacidad de un material para conducir una corriente eléctrica. Es comúnmente representado por la letra griega σ, pero κ o γ también se utilizan ocasionalmente. Su unidad SI es siemens por metro y unidad CGSE es recíproco segundo.
