Peiraikos, o Piraeicus, era un pintor del griego clásico de la fecha y de la localización inciertas. Ninguno de sus trabajos se sabe que han sobrevivido y sólo se conoce por una breve discusión del autor latino Plinio el Viejo. El pasaje de Plinio se acerca al inicio de su discusión de la pintura en el Libro XXXV.112 de su Historia Natural, completada hacia el año 78 dC: Es bueno añadir un relato de los artistas que ganaron fama con el pincel pintando cuadros más pequeños. Entre ellos estaba Peiraikos. En el dominio de su arte, pero pocos toman rango por encima de él, sin embargo, por su elección de un camino que tal vez ha estropeado su propio éxito, porque siguió una línea humilde, ganando sin embargo la más alta gloria que tuvo que traer. Pintó barberías, puestos de zapateros, asnos, comestibles y temas similares, ganándose el nombre de rhyparographos. Peiraikos, or Piraeicus, was an Ancient Greek painter of uncertain date and location. None of his work is known to have survived and he is known only from a brief discussion by the Latin author Pliny the Elder. Pliny's passage comes near the start of his discussion of painting in Book XXXV.112 of his Natural History, completed about 78 AD: It is well to add an account of the artists who won fame with the brush in painting smaller pictures. Amongst them was Peiraikos. In mastery of his art but few take rank above him, yet by his choice of a path he has perhaps marred his own success, for he followed a humble line, winning however the highest glory that it had to bring. He painted barbers' shops, cobblers' stalls, asses, eatables and similar subjects, earning for himself the name of rhyparographos. In these subjects he could give consummate pleasure, selling them for more than other artists received for their large pictures. In the terms of later art history, he painted cabinet paintings of genre subjects.
