El ribosoma es una máquina molecular grande y compleja, que se encuentra dentro de todas las células vivas, que sirve como el sitio primario de la síntesis de proteínas biológicas. Los ribosomas enlazan los aminoácidos en el orden especificado por las moléculas de ARN mensajero. Los ribosomas consisten en dos componentes principales: la pequeña subunidad ribosomal que lee el ARN y la subunidad grande que une aminoácidos para formar una cadena polipeptídica. Los ribosomas pueden unirse a una cadena de ARNm y usarla como una plantilla para determinar la secuencia correcta de aminoácidos en una proteína particular. Los aminoácidos son seleccionados, recogidos y transportados al ribosoma por ARN de transferencia, que entran en una parte del ribosoma y se unen a la cadena de ARN mensajero. A continuación, los aminoácidos unidos están unidos entre sí por otra parte del ribosoma.
