Rootkit
Un rootkit es un tipo furtivo de software, normalmente malicioso, diseñado para ocultar la existencia de ciertos procesos o programas de los métodos normales de detección y permitir el acceso privilegiado continuo a una computadora. El término rootkit es una concatenación de "root" (el nombre tradicional de la cuenta privilegiada en sistemas operativos Unix) y la palabra "kit" (que se refiere a los componentes de software que implementan la herramienta). El término "rootkit" tiene connotaciones negativas a través de su asociación con el malware. La instalación de rootkit puede ser automatizada, o un atacante puede instalarla una vez que haya obtenido acceso root o administrador. La obtención de este acceso es el resultado de un ataque directo a un sistema (es decir, explotando una vulnerabilidad conocida (como escalamiento de privilegios) o una contraseña (obtenida mediante craqueo o ingeniería social). Una vez instalado, se hace posible ocultar la intrusión, así como para mantener el acceso privilegiado. La clave es el acceso root o Administrator. El control total sobre un sistema significa que el software existente puede ser modificado, incluyendo el software que de otro modo podría ser usado para detectarlo o eludirlo.
