Fue introducido en Australia en 1919 y está clasificado como una raza en peligro de extinción por el Rare Breeds Trust de Australia y también son una de las nueve razas de patrimonio que fueron la base de la industria de las ovejas y lana en Australia. El Ryeland era una de las razas usadas para introducir el gen de la encuesta a la raza de Dorset en el desarrollo de la encuesta Dorset. Esta raza se cría principalmente para la carne.
