El ácido salicílico es un ácido monohidroxibenzoico, un tipo de ácido fenólico y un ácido beta hidroxi. Este ácido orgánico cristalino incoloro se utiliza ampliamente en la síntesis orgánica y funciona como una hormona vegetal. Se deriva del metabolismo de la salicina. Además de ser un importante metabolito activo de la aspirina, que actúa en parte como un profármaco del ácido salicílico, es probablemente mejor conocido por su uso como ingrediente clave en los productos tópicos anti-acné. Las sales y los ésteres del ácido salicílico se conocen como salicilatos.
