Escrutinio. En la época romana, el "escrutinio" de las ciudades y pueblos eran aquellos que, laboriosamente, buscaban objetos de valor en medio de los desperdicios y desechos de otros. El "escrutinio" inglés moderno se deriva de esta raíz, indicando un examen cuidadoso o una investigación. La palabra se aplica específicamente en la primera Iglesia Católica Romana al examen de los catecúmenos o de aquellos bajo instrucción en la fe. Se les enseñó el credo y la Oración del Señor, examinados allí, y exorcizados antes del bautismo. Los días de escrutinio variaron en diferentes períodos de tres a siete. A partir de finales del siglo XII, cuando se hacía habitual bautizar a los bebés poco después de su nacimiento en lugar de en los tiempos establecidos, la ceremonia de escrutinio se incorporó con la del bautismo real. En la actualidad, hay tres momentos para que los escrutinios ocurran: el 3er, 4to y 5to domingos de Cuaresma. Estos se hacen en público delante de toda la congregación, y los candidatos son despedidos antes de la Oración de los Fieles. Sólo bajo circunstancias graves se pueden dispensar los escrutinios, y sólo entonces el ordinario local. Los escrutinios están totalmente destinados a los catecúmenos.
