El selenio es un elemento químico con el símbolo Se y el número atómico 34. Es un metal no metálico con propiedades que son intermedias entre las de su tabla periódica columnas adyacentes a elementos de calcógeno azufre y telurio. El selenio fue descubierto en 1817 por Jöns Jacob Berzelius, quien señaló la similitud del nuevo elemento con el telurio previamente conocido.
