El Imperio Seleucida era un estado helenístico gobernado por la dinastía Seleucida fundada por Seleuco I Nicator siguiendo la división del imperio creado por Alejandro Magno. Seleuco recibió a Babilonia y, a partir de ahí, expandió sus dominios para incluir gran parte de los territorios orientales de Alejandro. A la altura de su poder, incluía la Anatolia central, Persia, Levante, Mesopotamia, Kuwait, lo que ahora es Pakistán, Afganistán, Turkmenistán y partes noroccidentales de la India. El Imperio seléucida era un centro importante de la cultura helenística que mantenía la preeminencia de las costumbres griegas, donde dominaba una élite política griega-macedonia, sobre todo en las zonas urbanas. La población griega de las ciudades que formaron la élite dominante fue reforzada por la emigración de Grecia.
