QUÉ SIGNIFICA SELF-ADVOCACY EN INGLÉS
Auto-promoción
La auto-promoción se refiere al movimiento de derechos civiles para las personas con discapacidades del desarrollo, también llamadas discapacidades cognitivas o intelectuales, y otras discapacidades. También es un término importante en el movimiento de los derechos de la discapacidad, refiriéndose a las personas con discapacidades tomando el control de sus propias vidas, incluyendo ser responsable de su propio cuidado en el sistema médico. El movimiento de auto-promoción se trata de que las personas con discapacidad hablen por sí mismas. Significa que aunque una persona con una discapacidad puede recurrir al apoyo de otros, el individuo tiene derecho a tener el control de sus propios recursos y de cómo se dirigen. Se trata de tener el derecho de tomar decisiones de vida sin la influencia indebida o el control de otros. Las personas con discapacidad intelectual son a menudo algunos de los miembros más impotentes de la sociedad. Pueden vivir en grandes instituciones o en residencias más pequeñas conocidas como hogares grupales que son ambientes dirigidos por el personal donde los residentes tienen poco o ningún control sobre sus condiciones de vida o con quienes comparten su espacio vital. Las personas con discapacidad intelectual son extremadamente vulnerables al abuso debido a su aislamiento social y físico.
