En matemáticas, un semigrupo es una estructura algebraica que consiste en un conjunto junto con una operación binaria asociativa. Un semigrupo generaliza un monoide en el que un semigrupo no necesita tener un elemento de identidad. También generalizó un grupo en que ningún elemento tenía que tener un inverso, por lo tanto el nombre semigroup. La operación binaria de un semigrupo se denomina con mayor frecuencia multiplicativa: o simplemente denota el resultado de aplicar la operación de semigrupo al par ordenado. Se requiere que la operación sea asociativa de manera que para todo x, yyz, pero no sea conmutativa, de modo que no tenga que ser igual. Por definición, un semigrupo es un magma asociativo. Un semigrupo con un elemento de identidad se llama monoide. Un grupo es entonces un monoide en el que cada elemento tiene un elemento inverso. Los semigrupos no deben confundirse con los cuasigrupos que son conjuntos con una operación binaria no necesariamente asociativa de tal manera que la división es siempre posible. El estudio formal de semigrupos comenzó a principios del siglo XX.

A semigroup with an identity element is called a monoid. A group is then a monoid in which every element has an inverse element. Semigroups must not be confused with quasigroups which are sets with a not necessarily associative binary operation such that division is always possible. The formal study of semigroups began in the early 20th century.
