Un sloop es un barco de vela con un solo mástil y una plataforma fore-and-aft. Una balandra tiene sólo una vela de cabecera y si una embarcación tiene dos o más velas de cabeza, se la denomina "cortadora" y su mástil puede colocarse más a popa que en una balandra. Por el contrario, en los Estados Unidos un sloop puede tener una, dos o tres velas a la cabeza del mástil, el término cortador que no se utiliza generalmente para los veleros. El aparejo más común de los veleros modernos es la barca de las Bermudas. Típicamente, un sloop moderno lleva una vela mayor en un boom detrás del mástil, con una sola vela de cabeza floja adelante del mástil. Los sloops son masthead-aparejado o fraccionado-aparejado. En un sloop masthead-aparejado, el estay se fija en la parte superior del mástil. La vela mayor puede ser más pequeña que la vela de proa, que se llama entonces foque de Génova. En un sloop fraccionado, el larguero se fija al mástil en un punto debajo de la tapa, típicamente 3/4 de la manera a la tapa, o quizás 7/8 o de alguna otra fracción. El mástil de un sloop fraccionado puede ser colocado más adelante, y comparado con un sloop masthead-aparejado, esto da lugar a un jib más pequeño en relación con el tamaño de la vela mayor.
