Plumaje desplegado Su hábitat de cría son grandes humedales continentales y costeros de los Grandes Lagos y del sudoeste de los Estados Unidos a América del Sur. El área de reproducción en el este de Norteamérica se extiende a lo largo de las costas del Atlántico y del Golfo de Maine a Texas, y en el interior a lo largo de los principales ríos y lagos. Anidan en colonias, a menudo con otros waders, generalmente en plataformas de palillos en árboles o arbustos. Sus nidos planos y poco profundos están hechos de palos y están alineados con finas ramitas y juncos. Tres a cuatro huevos ovales de color azul verdoso son incubados por ambos adultos.
