Solon
Solón era un estadista, legislador y poeta ateniense. Se le recuerda particularmente por sus esfuerzos por legislar contra el declive político, económico y moral en la Atenas arcaica. Sus reformas fracasaron en el corto plazo, pero a menudo se le atribuye haber puesto las bases de la democracia ateniense. El conocimiento de Solón está limitado por la falta de evidencia documental y arqueológica que cubre Atenas en el siglo VI antes de Cristo. Escribió poesía por placer, como propaganda patriótica, y en defensa de sus reformas constitucionales. Sus obras sólo sobreviven en fragmentos. Antiguos autores como Heródoto y Plutarco son la principal fuente de información, sin embargo, escribieron sobre Solón mucho después de su muerte, en un momento en que la historia no era en absoluto una disciplina académica.
