Geometría esférica
La geometría esférica es la geometría de la superficie bidimensional de una esfera. Es un ejemplo de una geometría que no es euclidiana. Dos aplicaciones prácticas de los principios de la geometría esférica son la navegación y la astronomía. En geometría plana los conceptos básicos son puntos y líneas. En la esfera, los puntos se definen en el sentido usual. Los equivalentes de las líneas no se definen en el sentido usual de "línea recta" en la geometría euclídea sino en el sentido de "los caminos más cortos entre los puntos", que se llaman geodésicas. En la esfera las geodésicas son los grandes círculos; Otros conceptos geométricos se definen como en geometría plana, pero con líneas rectas reemplazadas por grandes círculos. Así, en la geometría esférica se definen ángulos entre grandes círculos, resultando en una trigonometría esférica que difiere de la trigonometría ordinaria en muchos aspectos; Por ejemplo, la suma de los ángulos interiores de un triángulo excede 180 grados. La geometría esférica no es geometría elíptica pero comparte con esa geometría la propiedad de que una línea no tiene paralelos a través de un punto dado.
