Esferoide
Un esferoide o elipsoide de revolución es una superficie cuádrica obtenida por rotación de una elipse alrededor de uno de sus ejes principales; En otras palabras, un elipsoide con dos semi-diámetros iguales. Si la elipse se gira alrededor de su eje mayor, el resultado es un esferoide alargado, como un balón de fútbol americano o de rugby. Si la elipse gira alrededor de su eje menor, el resultado es un esferoide oblato, como una lenteja. Si la elipse generadora es un círculo, el resultado es una esfera. Debido a los efectos combinados de la gravitación y la rotación, la forma de la Tierra es aproximadamente la de una esfera ligeramente aplanada en la dirección de su eje. Por esta razón, en la cartografía la Tierra es a menudo aproximada por un esferoide oblato en lugar de una esfera. El modelo actual del Sistema Geodésico Mundial utiliza un esferoide cuyo radio es de 6,378.137 km en el ecuador y 6,356,752 km en los polos. La palabra esferoide originalmente significaba un cuerpo aproximadamente esférico y así es como se usa en algunos papeles más antiguos sobre geodesia. Para evitar la confusión, el esferoide debe ser definido como elipsoide de la revolución, si ese es el significado pretendido.
