En la anatomía, el epitelio escamoso es un epitelio caracterizado por su capa más superficial que consiste en células planas similares a escamas llamadas células epiteliales escamosas. El epitelio puede estar compuesto de una capa de estas células, en cuyo caso se denomina epitelio escamoso simple, o puede poseer múltiples capas, denominadas epitelio escamoso estratificado. Ambos tipos desempeñan diferentes funciones, que van desde el intercambio de nutrientes a la protección. Los cánceres del epitelio escamoso incluyen carcinoma de células escamosas, carcinoma basocelular y otros tumores anexiales. Las células epiteliales escamosas tienen un aspecto poligonal cuando se ven desde arriba.
