Stellarator
Un stellarator es un dispositivo utilizado para confinar un plasma caliente con campos magnéticos con el fin de mantener una reacción de fusión nuclear controlada. Es uno de los primeros dispositivos de fusión controlada, inventado por primera vez por Lyman Spitzer en 1950 y construido el próximo año en lo que más tarde se convirtió en el Laboratorio de Física de Plasma de Princeton. El nombre se refiere a la posibilidad de aprovechar la fuente de energía del sol, un objeto estelar. Stellarators eran populares en los años 50 y 60, pero los resultados mucho mejores de los diseños del tokamak los llevaron caer de favor en los años 70. Más recientemente, en la década de 1990, los problemas con el concepto de tokamak han llevado a un renovado interés en el diseño de la estrella, y una serie de nuevos dispositivos se han construido. Algunos experimentos modernos estelares importantes son Wendelstein 7-X, en Alemania, el experimento helicoidal simétrico en EE.UU. y el dispositivo helicoidal grande, en Japón.
