Estequiometría
Estequiometría / ˌstɔɪkiɒmɨtri / es el cálculo de las cantidades relativas de reactivos y productos en reacciones químicas. La estequiometría se basa en la ley de conservación de la masa donde la masa total de los reactivos es igual a la masa total de los productos, lo que lleva a la comprensión de que las relaciones entre cantidades de reactivos y productos típicamente forman una relación de enteros positivos. Esto significa que si se conocen las cantidades de reactivos separados, entonces se puede calcular la cantidad del producto. Por el contrario, si un reactivo tiene una cantidad conocida y la cantidad de producto puede determinarse empíricamente, también se puede calcular la cantidad de los otros reactivos. Como se ve en la imagen a la derecha, donde la ecuación equilibrada es: CH 4 + 2 O 2 → CO 2 + 2 H 2 O. Aquí, una molécula de metano reacciona con dos moléculas de gas oxígeno para producir una molécula de dióxido de carbono y dos moléculas de agua. La estequiometría mide estas relaciones cuantitativas y se usa para determinar la cantidad de productos / reactivos que se producen / necesitan en una reacción dada.
