En 1983 tenía una población de 18.030 y la estimación 2009 es 43, 337. Era antes el puerto principal de la región, pero ahora es secundario a Port Sudan, cerca de 30 millas de norte. La vieja ciudad construida de coral está en ruinas. Los transbordadores funcionan diariamente de Suakin a Jeddah en la Arabia Saudita.
