Subespecie
En la clasificación biológica, la subespecie es un rango taxonómico subordinado a las especies, o una unidad taxonómica en ese rango. Una subespecie no puede ser reconocida aisladamente: una especie será reconocida como no teniendo ninguna subespecie en absoluto o dos o más, nunca una sola. Según el Código Internacional de Nomenclatura Zoológica, la subespecie es el único rango taxonómico inferior al de las especies que pueden recibir un nombre. En virtud del Código Internacional de Nomenclatura de algas, hongos y plantas, pueden nombrarse otros rangos infraespecíficos como la variedad. En bacteriología, hay recomendaciones pero no requisitos estrictos para reconocer otras filas infraspecific importantes. Un taxonomista decide si reconocer subespecies o no. Una forma común de decidir es que los organismos pertenecientes a diferentes subespecies de la misma especie son capaces de cruzarse y producir descendencia fértil, pero no se cruzan en la naturaleza debido al aislamiento geográfico u otros factores. Las diferencias entre las subespecies suelen ser menos distintas que las diferencias entre especies.
