Los sunbirds y los spiderhunters componen una familia, Nectariniidae, de pájaros del passerine muy pequeños. Hay 132 especies en 15 géneros. La familia se distribuye por toda África, el subcontinente indio, el sudeste asiático y sólo llega al norte de Australia. La mayoría de los sunbirds se alimentan principalmente de néctar, pero también toman insectos y arañas, especialmente cuando se alimentan jóvenes. Las semejanzas se deben a una evolución convergente provocada por un estilo de vida similar al de la alimentación del néctar. Algunas especies de sunbird pueden tomar el néctar flotando como un colibrí, pero por lo general se posan para alimentarse.
