Pus
El pus es un exudado, típicamente blanco-amarillo, amarillo, o amarillo-marrón, formado en el sitio de la inflamación durante la infección. Una acumulación de pus en un espacio de tejido cerrado se conoce como absceso, mientras que una colección visible de pus dentro o debajo de la epidermis se conoce como una pústula o espinilla. El Pus consiste en un fluido delgado, rico en proteínas, conocido como licor puris, y leucocitos muertos de la respuesta inmune del cuerpo. Durante la infección, los macrófagos liberan citoquinas que activan neutrófilos para buscar el sitio de la infección por quimiotaxis. Allí, los neutrófilos engolfan y destruyen las bacterias y las bacterias resisten la respuesta inmune liberando toxinas llamadas leucocidinas. Como los neutrófilos mueren de toxinas y la vejez, son destruidos por los macrófagos, formando el pus viscoso. Las bacterias que causan pus se llaman supurativas, piógenas o purulentas. Si el agente también crea moco, se le llama mucopurulento. A pesar de ser normalmente de un tono amarillo-blanquecino, los cambios en el color del pus se pueden observar bajo ciertas circunstancias.
