Sincrotrón
Un sincrotrón es un tipo particular de acelerador de partículas cíclico, descendiente del ciclotrón, en el cual el campo magnético de guía es dependiente del tiempo, sincronizado con un haz de partículas de energía cinética creciente. El sincrotrón es uno de los primeros conceptos de acelerador para permitir la construcción de instalaciones a gran escala, ya que la flexión, el enfoque del haz y la aceleración pueden separarse en diferentes componentes. Edwin McMillan construyó el primer sincrotrón de electrones en 1945, aunque Vladimir Veksler ya había publicado el principio en una revista soviética en 1944. El primer sincrotrón de protones fue diseñado por Sir Marcus Oliphant y construido en 1952.
