El tecnecio es el elemento químico con el número atómico 43 y el símbolo Tc. Es el elemento de número atómico más bajo sin isótopos estables; Cada forma es radiactiva. Casi todo el tecnecio se produce sintéticamente, y sólo cantidades mínimas se encuentran en la naturaleza. El tecnecio natural ocurre como un producto de fisión espontánea en el mineral de uranio o por captura de neutrones en los minerales de molibdeno. Las propiedades químicas de este metal de transición cristalino gris plateado son intermedias entre el renio y el manganeso. Muchas de las propiedades del technetium fueron predichas por Dmitri Mendeleev antes de que el elemento fuera descubierto. Mendeleev notó una brecha en su tabla periódica y le dio al elemento no descubierto el nombre provisional ekamanganese. En 1937, el tecnecio se convirtió en el primer elemento predominantemente artificial que se produjo, de ahí su nombre. Su isómero nuclear de radiación gamma de corta duración-tecnecio-99m-se utiliza en medicina nuclear para una amplia variedad de pruebas de diagnóstico. El tecnecio-99 se utiliza como una fuente libre de rayos gamma de partículas beta.
