Heterostyly es una forma única de polimorfismo y herkogamy en flores. En una especie heterostílica, existen dos o tres tipos morfológicos de flores, denominados morfos, en la población. En cada planta individual, todas las flores comparten el mismo morph. Los morphs de la flor diferencian en las longitudes del pistil y de los estambres, y estos rasgos no son continuos. El fenotipo morph está genéticamente vinculado a los genes responsables de un sistema único de auto-incompatibilidad, denominado heteromorphic auto-incompatibilidad, es decir, el polen de una flor en un morph no puede fertilizar otra flor de la misma morph. Las plantas heterotípicas que tienen dos formas de flor se denominan distylous. En una morfología los estambres son cortos y los pistilos son largos; En el segundo morph los estambres son largos y los pistils son cortos; La longitud del pistilo en un morph es igual a la longitud de los estambres en el segundo morph, y viceversa. Ejemplos de plantas distylous son el primrose y muchas otras especies de Primula, lino y otras especies de Linum, algunas especies de Lythrum, y muchas especies de Cryptantha.

Heterostyly is a unique form of polymorphism and herkogamy in flowers. In a heterostylous species, two or three morphological types of flowers, termed morphs, exist in the population. On each individual plant, all flowers share the same morph. The flower morphs differ in the lengths of the pistil and stamens, and these traits are not continuous. The morph phenotype is genetically linked to genes responsible for a unique system of self-incompatibility, termed heteromorphic self-incompatibility, that is, the pollen from a flower on one morph cannot fertilize another flower of the same morph. Heterostylous plants having two flower morphs are termed distylous. In one morph the stamens are short and the pistils are long; in the second morph the stamens are long and the pistils are short; the length of the pistil in one morph equals the length of the stamens in the second morph, and vice versa. Examples of distylous plants are the primrose and many other Primula species, flax and other Linum species, some Lythrum species, and many species of Cryptantha.
