El tolueno / tɒluːiːn /, anteriormente conocido como toluol / tɒluːɒl /, es un líquido transparente, insoluble en agua, con el olor típico de los diluyentes de pintura. Es un derivado de benceno monosustituido, es decir, uno en el que un solo átomo de hidrógeno de un grupo de seis átomos de la molécula de benceno ha sido reemplazado por un grupo univalente, en este caso CH3. Como tal, su nombre sistemático IUPAC es metilbenceno. Es un hidrocarburo aromático que se utiliza ampliamente como materia prima industrial y como disolvente. Al igual que otros disolventes, el tolueno se utiliza a veces también como un fármaco inhalante para sus propiedades intoxicantes; Sin embargo, la inhalación de tolueno tiene el potencial de causar daño neurológico severo. El tolueno es un disolvente orgánico importante, pero también es capaz de disolver una serie de sustancias químicas inorgánicas notables tales como azufre, yodo, bromo, fósforo y otras sustancias covalentes no polares.
