Reflexión interna total
La reflexión interna total es un fenómeno que ocurre cuando una onda de propagación golpea un límite medio en un ángulo mayor que un ángulo crítico particular con respecto a la normal a la superficie. Si el índice de refracción es más bajo en el otro lado del límite y el ángulo de incidencia es mayor que el ángulo crítico, la onda no puede atravesar y se refleja completamente. El ángulo crítico es el ángulo de incidencia por encima del cual se produce la reflectancia interna total. Esto es particularmente común como un fenómeno óptico, donde las ondas de luz están involucradas, pero se produce con muchos tipos de ondas, como ondas electromagnéticas en general o ondas sonoras. Cuando una onda cruza un límite entre diferentes materiales con diferentes tipos de índices de refracción, la onda será parcialmente refractada en la superficie límite y parcialmente reflejada. Sin embargo, si el ángulo de incidencia es mayor que el ángulo crítico -el ángulo de incidencia en el que la luz es refractada de tal manera que se desplaza a lo largo del límite- entonces la onda no cruzará el límite y en su lugar será totalmente reflejada internamente.
