Tricromacy
Tricromacy o trichromaticism es la condición de poseer tres canales independientes para transportar información de color, derivada de los tres diferentes tipos de cono. Los organismos con tricromacy se llaman trichromats. La explicación normal de la tricromacia es que la retina del organismo contiene tres tipos de receptores de color con diferentes espectros de absorción. En realidad, el número de tales tipos de receptores puede ser mayor que tres, ya que diferentes tipos pueden ser activos a diferentes intensidades de luz. En los vertebrados con tres tipos de células de cono, a baja intensidad de luz las células de la varilla pueden contribuir a la visión de color.
