En las telecomunicaciones, el trunking es un método para que un sistema proporcione acceso a la red a muchos clientes compartiendo un conjunto de líneas o frecuencias en lugar de proporcionarlas individualmente. Esto es análogo a la estructura de un árbol con un tronco y muchas ramas. Ejemplos de ello son los sistemas telefónicos y las radios VHF de uso común por las agencias policiales. Más recientemente, el trunking de puertos también se ha aplicado en redes de computadoras. Un tronco es un único canal de transmisión entre dos puntos, siendo cada punto el centro de conmutación o el nodo.
