Turborreactor
El turborreactor es un motor a reacción, usualmente utilizado en aviones. Consiste en una turbina de gas con una boquilla propulsora. La turbina de gas tiene una entrada de aire, un compresor, una cámara de combustión y una turbina. El aire comprimido del compresor, es calentado por el combustible en la cámara de combustión y entonces se permite que se expanda a través de la turbina. El escape de turbina se expande entonces en la tobera propulsora, donde se acelera a alta velocidad para proporcionar empuje. Dos ingenieros, Frank Whittle en el Reino Unido y Hans von Ohain en Alemania, desarrollaron el concepto de forma independiente en motores prácticos durante la década de 1930. Los turborreactores han sido reemplazados en aviones más lentos por turbopropulsores que utilizan menos combustible. A velocidades más altas, donde la hélice ya no es eficiente, han sido reemplazados por turbohélices. El turbofan es más silencioso y utiliza menos combustible que el turborreactor. Los turborreactores son todavía comunes en misiles de crucero de alcance medio, debido a su alta velocidad de escape, pequeña área frontal y relativa simplicidad. El motor de reacción es solamente eficiente a altas velocidades del vehículo, que limita su utilidad aparte de la aeronave.
