Tyrannosaurus (/ tɨˌrænəsɔrəs / or / taɪˌrænəsɔrəs / significa "tirano lagarto", del griego tyrannos (τύραννος) que significa "tirano", y sauros (σαῦρος) que significa "lagarto") es un género dinosaurio terópodo coelurosauriano. La especie Tyrannosaurus rex (rex que significa "rey" en latín), comúnmente abreviado a T. rex, es un accesorio en la cultura popular. El T. rex vivió a lo largo de lo que ahora es el oeste de América del Norte, que entonces era un continente insular llamado Laramidia. Tyrannosaurus tenía una gama mucho más amplia que otros tiranosáuridos. Los fósiles se encuentran en una variedad de formaciones rocosas que datan de la era Maastrichtiana del período Cretáceo superior, hace 67 a 66 millones de años. Fue uno de los últimos dinosaurios no aviares que existían antes del evento de extinción Cretácico-Paleógeno. Al igual que otros tiranosáuridos, el tiranosaurio era un carnívoro bípedo con un cráneo masivo equilibrado por una cola larga y pesada.
