Estructura cristalina
En la mineralogía y la cristalografía, una estructura cristalina es una disposición única de átomos o moléculas en un líquido cristalino o sólido. Una estructura cristalina describe una estructura altamente ordenada, que se produce debido a la naturaleza intrínseca de las moléculas para formar patrones simétricos. Una estructura cristalina puede ser pensada como una serie infinitamente repetitiva de 'cajas' 3D, conocidas como celdas unitarias. La celda unitaria se calcula a partir de la representación más simple posible de las moléculas, conocida como la unidad asimétrica. La unidad asimétrica se traslada a la celda unitaria a través de operaciones de simetría, y la red cristalina resultante se construye mediante repetición de la celda unitaria infinitamente en 3 dimensiones. Los patrones se localizan sobre los puntos de una red, que es una serie de puntos que se repiten periódicamente en tres dimensiones. Las longitudes de los bordes de una celda unitaria y los ángulos entre ellos se denominan parámetros de retícula. Las propiedades de simetría del cristal están incorporadas en su grupo espacial.
