El Tiempo Universal es un estándar de tiempo basado en la rotación de la Tierra. Es una continuación moderna del tiempo medio de Greenwich, es decir, el tiempo solar medio en el meridiano principal en Greenwich, y GMT se utiliza a veces flojamente como sinónimo para UTC. De hecho, la expresión "Tiempo Universal" es ambigua, ya que hay varias versiones de la misma, la más comúnmente utilizada es UTC y UT1. Todas estas versiones de UT se basan en la rotación de la Tierra en relación con objetos celestes distantes, pero con un factor de escala y otros ajustes para hacerlos más cercanos al tiempo solar.
