Sistema urinario
El sistema urinario, también conocido como el sistema renal, consiste en los dos riñones, los uréteres, la vejiga y la uretra. Cada riñón consta de millones de unidades funcionales llamadas nefronas. El propósito del sistema renal es eliminar los desechos del cuerpo, regular el volumen y la presión sanguínea, controlar los niveles de electrolitos y metabolitos y regular el pH de la sangre. Los riñones tienen un suministro extenso de sangre a través de las arterias renales que dejan los riñones a través de la vena renal. Después de la filtración de la sangre y el procesamiento posterior, los residuos salen del riñón a través de los uréteres, tubos hechos de fibras de músculo liso que propulsan la orina hacia la vejiga urinaria, donde se almacena y posteriormente expulsado del cuerpo por la micción. El sistema urinario femenino y masculino son muy similares, difiriendo solamente en la longitud de la uretra. La orina se forma en los riñones a través de una filtración de sangre. La orina es entonces pasada a través de los uréteres a la vejiga, donde se almacena. Durante la micción, la orina pasa de la vejiga a través de la uretra hacia el exterior del cuerpo.
