El ácido valérico, o ácido pentanoico, es un ácido alquilcarboxílico de cadena lineal con la fórmula química C5H10O2. Al igual que otros ácidos carboxílicos de bajo peso molecular, tiene un olor muy desagradable. Se encuentra naturalmente en la floración perenne flor valeriana, de la que obtiene su nombre. Su principal uso es la síntesis de sus ésteres. Los ésteres volátiles de ácido valérico tienden a tener olores agradables y se usan en perfumes y cosméticos. El valerato de etilo y el valerato de pentilo se usan como aditivos alimentarios debido a sus sabores afrutados. El ácido valérico presenta una estructura similar al GHB y al neurotransmisor GABA, ya que es un ácido carboxílico de cadena corta, aunque carece de los grupos funcionales alcohol y amina que contribuyen a las actividades biológicas de GHB y GABA, respectivamente. Se diferencia del ácido valproico simplemente por carecer de una cadena lateral de 3 carbonos.

Valeric acid, or pentanoic acid, is a straight-chain alkyl carboxylic acid with the chemical formula C5H10O2. Like other low-molecular-weight carboxylic acids, it has a very unpleasant odor. It is found naturally in the perennial flowering plant valerian, from which it gets its name. Its primary use is in the synthesis of its esters. Volatile esters of valeric acid tend to have pleasant odors and are used in perfumes and cosmetics. Ethyl valerate and pentyl valerate are used as food additives because of their fruity flavors. Valeric acid appears similar in structure to GHB and the neurotransmitter GABA in that it is a short-chain carboxylic acid, although it lacks the alcohol and amine functional groups that contribute to the biological activities of GHB and GABA, respectively. It differs from valproic acid simply by lacking a 3-carbon side-chain.
