Guía de ondas
Una guía de ondas es una estructura que guía las ondas, como ondas electromagnéticas o ondas sonoras. Existen diferentes tipos de guías de onda para cada tipo de onda. El significado original y más común es un tubo conductor de metal hueco usado para transportar ondas de radio de alta frecuencia, particularmente microondas. La geometría de una guía de ondas refleja su función. Las guías de onda de la losa confinan la energía para viajar sólo en una dimensión, fibra o guía de ondas de canal para dos dimensiones. La frecuencia de la onda transmitida también dicta la forma de una guía de ondas: una fibra óptica que guía la luz de alta frecuencia no guiará las microondas de una frecuencia mucho más baja. Como regla general, la anchura de una guía de ondas debe ser del mismo orden de magnitud que la longitud de onda de la onda guiada. Algunas estructuras naturales también pueden actuar como guías de onda. La capa de canal SOFAR en el océano puede guiar el sonido de la canción de la ballena a través de distancias enormes.
