Western Ghats
Los Ghats occidentales son una cordillera que corre casi paralela a la costa occidental de la península india. Es un sitio del patrimonio mundial de la UNESCO y es uno de los ocho "puntos calientes más calientes" de la diversidad biológica en el mundo. A veces se la llama la Gran Escarpa de la India. La gama va del norte al sur a lo largo del borde occidental de la meseta de Deccan, y separa la meseta de una llanura costera estrecha, llamada Konkan, a lo largo del mar de Arabia. Un total de treinta y nueve propiedades, incluyendo parques nacionales, santuarios de vida silvestre y bosques de reserva fueron designados como sitios del patrimonio mundial - veinte en Kerala, diez en Karnataka, cinco en Tamil Nadu y cuatro en Maharashtra. El rango comienza cerca de la frontera de Gujarat y Maharashtra, al sur del río Tapti, y corre aproximadamente 1,600 km a través de los estados de Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu y Kerala, terminando en Kanyakumari, en el extremo sur de la India.
