Polilla del invierno
La polilla del invierno es una polilla de la familia Geometridae. Es una especie abundante de Europa y el Cercano Oriente y uno de muy pocos Lepidoptera de regiones templadas en las cuales los adultos son activos en la profundidad del invierno. La hembra de esta especie es prácticamente sin alas y no puede volar, pero el macho está totalmente alado y vuela fuertemente. Las polillas del invierno se consideran una especie invasora en Norteamérica; Nueva Escocia experimentó las primeras infestaciones confirmadas en los años treinta. La polilla se encuentra ahora en Columbia Británica, Washington, Oregón, Nuevo Brunswick, Isla del Príncipe Eduardo, Massachusetts, Rhode Island y Maine. En Massachusetts, las polillas han atraído la atención de varios medios de comunicación debido a la severidad de la infestación. En el norte de Rhode Island, el daño a los huertos frutales se ha atribuido a la polilla del invierno, y ahora se informa en el mediados de Rhode Island del sur. Los esfuerzos en el control biológico están en curso. Ha habido informes no confirmados de infestaciones en el sur de New Hampshire.
