Una estación de trabajo es una computadora especial diseñada para aplicaciones técnicas o científicas. Destinados principalmente a ser utilizados por una persona a la vez, son comúnmente conectados a una red de área local y ejecutar sistemas operativos multiusuario. El término estación de trabajo también se ha utilizado vagamente para referirse a todo, desde un terminal de computadora mainframe a un PC conectado a una red, pero la forma más común se refiere al grupo de hardware ofrecido por varias empresas actuales y desaparecidas como Sun Microsystems, Silicon Graphics , Apollo Computer, DEC, HP e IBM, que abrió la puerta a la revolución de animación gráfica en 3D de finales de los años noventa. Las estaciones de trabajo ofrecían un rendimiento superior al de los ordenadores personales convencionales, especialmente con respecto a la CPU y los gráficos, la capacidad de memoria y la capacidad multitarea. A workstation is a special computer designed for technical or scientific applications. Intended primarily to be used by one person at a time, they are commonly connected to a local area network and run multi-user operating systems. The term workstation has also been used loosely to refer to everything from a mainframe computer terminal to a PC connected to a network, but the most common form refers to the group of hardware offered by several current and defunct companies such as Sun Microsystems, Silicon Graphics, Apollo Computer, DEC, HP and IBM which opened the door for the 3D graphics animation revolution of the late 1990s. Workstations offered higher performance than mainstream personal computers, especially with respect to CPU and graphics, memory capacity, and multitasking capability. Workstations were optimized for the visualization and manipulation of different types of complex data such as 3D mechanical design, engineering simulation, animation and rendering of images, and mathematical plots.
