Un sistema de coordenadas cartesiano es un sistema de coordenadas que especifica cada punto únicamente en un plano por un par de coordenadas numéricas, que son las distancias señaladas desde el punto hasta dos líneas perpendiculares fijas, medidas en la misma unidad de longitud. Cada línea de referencia se denomina eje de coordenadas o sólo eje del sistema, y el punto donde se encuentran es su origen, usualmente en el par ordenado. Las coordenadas también pueden definirse como las posiciones de las proyecciones perpendiculares del punto sobre los dos ejes, expresadas como distancias firmadas desde el origen. Se puede usar el mismo principio para especificar la posición de cualquier punto en el espacio tridimensional por tres coordenadas cartesianas, sus distancias señaladas a tres planos mutuamente perpendiculares. En general, n coordenadas cartesianas especifican el punto en un espacio euclidiano n-dimensional para cualquier dimensión n. Estas coordenadas son iguales, hasta el signo, a distancias desde el punto hasta n hiperplanos mutuamente perpendiculares.
