La cristalografía de rayos X es una herramienta utilizada para identificar la estructura atómica y molecular de un cristal, en la que los átomos cristalinos hacen que un rayo de rayos X incidentes se difracte en muchas direcciones específicas. Al medir los ángulos e intensidades de estos haces difractados, un cristalógrafo puede producir una imagen tridimensional de la densidad de electrones dentro del cristal. A partir de esta densidad de electrones, se pueden determinar las posiciones medias de los átomos en el cristal, así como sus enlaces químicos, su desorden y varias otras informaciones. Puesto que muchos materiales pueden formar cristales -como sales, metales, minerales, semiconductores, así como varias moléculas inorgánicas, orgánicas y biológicas- la cristalografía de rayos X ha sido fundamental en el desarrollo de muchos campos científicos. En sus primeras décadas de uso, este método determinó el tamaño de los átomos, las longitudes y tipos de enlaces químicos y las diferencias de escala atómica entre diversos materiales, especialmente minerales y aleaciones. El método también reveló la estructura y función de muchas moléculas biológicas, incluyendo vitaminas, fármacos, proteínas y ácidos nucleicos como el ADN.
