Xuanzang
Xuanzang, nacido Chen Hui o Chen Yi, fue un monje budista chino, erudito, viajero y traductor que describió la interacción entre China y la India en la primera dinastía Tang. Nacido en lo que hoy es la provincia de Henan alrededor de 602, desde la infancia llevó a leer libros religiosos, incluyendo los clásicos chinos y los escritos de antiguos sabios. Mientras residía en la ciudad de Luoyang, Xuanzang entró en la monarquía budista a la edad de trece años. Debido al malestar político y social causado por la caída de la Dinastía Sui, fue a Chengdu en Sichuan, donde fue ordenado a la edad de veinte años. Más tarde viajó por toda China en busca de libros sagrados del budismo. Por fin, llegó a Chang'an, luego bajo el gobierno pacífico del emperador Taizong de Tang, Xuanzang desarrolló el deseo de visitar la India. Sabía de la visita de Faxian a la India y, como él, estaba preocupado por la naturaleza incompleta y mal interpretada de las escrituras budistas que habían llegado a China.
