La hipoxia ocurre después de la hipoxia postoperatoria. Hay dos tipos grandes de hipoxia. Una de ellas es la hipoxia relacionada principalmente con la anestesia durante varias horas después de la cirugía, y la otra es la hipoxia causada por una cirugía o asociada a una disfunción pulmonar antes de la cirugía. El primero se cree que se debe a la oclusión de las vías respiratorias periféricas debido a la ventilación alveolar debido a los efectos de diversos agentes anestésicos, la acumulación de secreciones y la disminución de los reflejos de la tos. Este último es causado por complicaciones pulmonares, como la operación en sí o la atelectasia postoperatoria. 수술후저산소증 수술후에 저산소증이 생기는데 여기에는 2개의 큰 유형이 있다. 하나는 수술직후부터 수시간에 걸치는 주로 마취에 관련한 저산소증이고 또 하나는 수술에 의한 것, 또는 수술전의 폐기능 장애와 관련해서 생기는 저산소증이다. 전자는 각종 마취제의 효과에 의한 폐포저환기와 분비물의 축적, 기침반사의 저하 등에 따른 말초기도의 폐색에 따른 것으로 생각되고 있다. 후자는 수술자체나 수술후에 생긴 무기폐 등의 폐합병증에 의해서 야기되는 것이다.
