Cuando la diferencia de potencial eléctrico entre el interior y el exterior de la celda se observa mediante un método tal como un electrodo de célula despolarizante, el interior de la película que no se excita es eléctricamente negativo en comparación con el exterior. En otras palabras, la membrana celular está polarizada eléctricamente en su lado exterior. Esta diferencia de potencial se conoce como potencial estacionario o potencial de membrana (potencial de membrana). Entonces, cuando la corriente fluye hacia afuera (a través de la membrana celular), la magnitud del potencial estacionario disminuye. La reducción del potencial estacionario es una reducción de la diferencia de potencial en la película, que es un proceso en el que la polarización de la película desaparece, y este fenómeno se denomina despolarización. En general, la causa de la despolarización se llama despolarización, y el potencial de acción es una despolarización en un sentido amplio. 탈분극 세포내 전극 등의 방법으로 세포내외의 전위차(電位差)를 보면, 흥분하고 있지 않은 막(膜)의 내측은 외측에 비하여 전기적으로 부(負)이다. 즉 세포막은 외측이 전기적으로 정(正)으로 분극하고 있다. 이 전위차를 정지전위 또는 막전위(膜電位)라고 한다. 그래서 세포막을 가로질러 전류를 외향(外向)으로 흘리면 정지전위의 크기는 감소한다. 정지전위의 감소는 막에 있는 전위차의 감소로서, 막의 분극이 소실하여 가는 과정임으로, 이 현상을 탈분극(脫分極)이라고 한다. 일반적으로는 어떠한 원인이건, 정지전위가 감소하는 것을 탈분극이라고 하며, 활동전위도 넓은 의미의 탈분극이다.
