이자액에서 분비되는 단백질 분해효소로 이자에서 비활성의 전구물질인 트립시노겐이 만들어지고 이자액 속에 분비되어 소장에 운반되면 거기에서 엔테로키나아제 또는 트립신 자체에 의하여 활성화되어 트립신이 된다. 단백질의 소화에 있어서 펩신과 함께 가장 중요한 효소이다.
