Ion
Un ion es un átomo, un grupo atómico o una partícula subatómica con una sola cantidad de carga eléctrica. Los iones más simples son electrones, protones y partículas alfa. Un ion con carga negativa, que tiene más electrones en la capa de electrones que la cantidad de protones en el núcleo, se conoce como anión, ya que se lo atrae al ánodo; mientras que un ion con carga positiva, que tiene menos electrones que protones, se conoce como catión, ya que es atraído por el cátodo. Un anión poliatom que contiene oxígeno a veces se conoce como oxianión. Los iones se marcan igual que los átomos neutros y las moléculas que actúan eléctricamente, excepto por la presencia de un "superíndice" que indica la cantidad de carga eléctrica y el número de electrones en más de uno. Por ejemplo: H +, SO42-. Otra forma de mostrar esta carga es la siguiente: SO4-2.
