Átomo: la sustancia básica de la materia Consiste en un pequeño núcleo de alta densidad cargado positivamente y una nube de electrones circundante con una carga eléctrica negativa. La palabra átomo proviene del griego ἄτομος - átomos, que significa algo que no se puede cortar ni dividir. La idea de la existencia de componentes indivisibles de la materia ya ha aparecido en las escrituras de los antiguos filósofos indios y griegos. En los siglos XVII y XVIII, los químicos confirmaron estos supuestos, identificando elementos químicos y mostrando que reaccionan entre sí en proporciones estrictamente definidas. En el siglo diecinueve, se descubrieron los movimientos de Brown, una prueba indirecta de la granulosidad de la materia. A principios del siglo XX, los físicos examinaron la estructura interna de los átomos, mostrando que son divisibles. Las teorías de la mecánica cuántica permitieron crear modelos matemáticos del interior de un átomo. Los átomos tienen un tamaño de 10-10 my una masa de 10-26 kg. Słowo atom pochodzi z greckiego ἄτομος – átomos, oznaczającego coś, czego nie da się przeciąć ani podzielić. Idea istnienia niepodzielnych składników materii pojawiła się już w pismach starożytnych filozofów indyjskich i greckich. W XVII i XVIII wieku chemicy potwierdzili te przypuszczenia, identyfikując pierwiastki chemiczne i pokazując, że reagują one ze sobą w ściśle określonych proporcjach. W XIX wieku odkryto ruchy Browna, będące pośrednim dowodem ziarnistości materii. Na początku XX wieku fizycy zbadali wewnętrzną strukturę atomów, pokazując tym samym, że są one podzielne. Teorie mechaniki kwantowej pozwoliły stworzyć matematyczne modele wnętrza atomu. Atomy mają rozmiary rzędu 10−10 m i masę rzędu 10−26 kg. Można je obserwować przez skaningowy mikroskop tunelowy. Ponad 99,9% masy atomu jest zawarte w jego jądrze.
