Willem Barents - marinero holandés y viajero. Su nombre se deriva del nombre del Mar de Barents y las Islas Barents. En 1594 dejó Ámsterdam en dos barcos. Navegó hacia el noreste, con la esperanza de encontrar un paso marítimo que llevara a Asia. Llegó a Nueva Tierra, pero tuvo que regresar debido al mal tiempo. Ekspedycja wyruszyła z Amsterdamu 10 maja 1596 i zatrzymała się na Półwyspie Kolskim, po czym skierowała się na północny zachód. 9 czerwca 1596 odkryto Wyspę Niedźwiedzią na morzu, nazwanym później Morzem Barentsa, po czym dalej na północ odkryto Spitsbergen. Wkrótce potem statki rozdzieliły się, Rijp miał zbadać wybrzeża lądu, a Heemskerck z Barentsem skierowali się na wschód. Dotarli do Nowej Ziemi, próbując obejść ją od północy.
