Budō

Budō - la forma de luchar, el arte de la guerra. El término budō está cerca de otros dos nombres: bujutsu y bugei. En la era Meiji y en el comienzo de la era Shōwa, existe una demanda de una mayor "espiritualidad" de las artes marciales japonesas. Como el término se usa para referirse a una naturaleza más bien técnica, se señaló que un nuevo término debería reflejar la naturaleza espiritual de las artes marciales y los deportes. En 1919, la organización Dai Nippon Butokukai, uniendo el principal arte marcial japonés, puso sobre la modernidad Gekken, jujutsu y kyujutsu, y comenzó a promover, respectivamente, el kendo, judo y kyudo. El término budō se refiere a estas tres disciplinas. Ahora entender este término es mucho más amplio. También cuenta con una experta en artes marciales como el Aikido, Ju-kendo, karate-do, naginatajutsu, Iaido, Jodo, Battodo, Shorinji Kempo y el sumo. Los campos de budō tradicionales a menudo se conocen como koryū, mientras que las artes marciales japonesas modernas y las disciplinas deportivas se conocen como gendai-budō.

Ponieważ dotychczas stosowany termin bujutsu implikował trening natury raczej technicznej, wskazywano, że powinno pojawić się nowe określenie odzwierciedlające właśnie tę duchową naturę sztuk i sportów walki. W roku 1919 organizacja Dai Nippon Butokukai, jednocząca wówczas główne japońskie sztuki walki, postawiła na nowoczesność gekken, jūjutsu oraz kyūjutsu, i zaczęła propagować odpowiednio: kendō, jūdō i kyūdō. Termin budō odnosił się wówczas do tych trzech dyscyplin. Obecnie rozumienie tego terminu jest znacznie szersze. Obejmuje ponadto takie sztuki i sporty walki jak aikidō, jū-kendō, karate-dō, naginata-dō, iaidō, jōdō, battōdō, shōrinji kenpō i sumō. Tradycyjne dziedziny budō często określane są terminem koryū, natomiast wywodzące się z nich nowoczesne japońskie sztuki walki i dyscypliny sportowe określa się jako gendai-budō.
